We've been told you must glue carpet tiles down. Is that true?
Some tiles need to be glued. Other higher quality carpet tiles need no glue. Not gluing allows for the tiles to be removed, scrubbed in the sink, dried and put back in place - quite an advantage.
I recently installed a Pergo laminate floor in my Family Room and kitchen... The Pergo is peaking up badly and peeling and staining in the kitchen... What is causing this?
I'm 99% sure your installer is to blame. The flooring is binding, so it can't expand properly as the room temperature changes. Remove the shoe mold and you'll find that in many areas the flooring is jammed up next to the wall (and probably the shoe mold nails are also improperly driven into the flooring). The peeling and staining in the kitchen is caused by water. Take care in watering your plants, feeding your pets, and watching for spills at the fridge.
I've heard berber carpet is subject to yellowing. What's that all about?
There are some reports of that happening, particularly in the northern part of the US, but it's not widespread. Some berbers have a Ph factor that reacts with the pad causing a discoloration of the face yarns. Just ask your dealer for a guaranteed non-yellowing pad. It's not expensive and your potential problem is solved.
How do I get candlewax out of my new berber carpet?
Set your iron on synthetic setting...lay a towel over the wax spill...iron over the towel until the wax melts into the towel... (careful not to overheat...you can melt the carpet pile)...if the stain or small amount of wax is left...clean with clorox... if your carpet is 100% solution dyed yarns(ask your dealer)... if not use any carpet spot cleaner product.
Please advise on how to keep our new carpet looking nice.
Regular vacuuming. Most importantly, however, once a year call in a professional carpet cleaner... but only ONE really knows their P's & Q's. E-mail me and I'll tell you more.
What is the best type of fiber for our new carpeting -- nylon, olefin, wool, polyester, or others? Every place I shop seems to suggest a different fiber... who's right?
The right fiber for you depends on your lifestyle. Do you need carpet for use in a much lived-in house with kids and pets? Or is it for commercial use? Or a little-used plush mansion? We need to know if we are to help you select the right fiber. Then, we will be glad to give you fiber test results from years of study. For fiber information -- just call Biscuit at our toll free number, 1-800-826-5805
Is pad really necessary under our new carpet?
Yes, but we've found that no matter what grade of pad you use, the same performance seems to prevail. Without pad your carpet will pack down quickly (except Level Loop Commercial & Berber which wear better or as well without pad.) So, pad is important, but don't be sold the highest-price pad -- go to the midrange.
We own 20 apartment units. What carpet do you recommend?
We've had best success reported with a direct glue-down commercial carpet, where rental structure permits, and a solution-dyed short twist and pad where higher rents require a finer decor.
We are buying a new home. In our present home, our carpet, which was in the home when we bought it, packed down almost overnight. Recommend a sturdy carpet for our new home.
Most 50- to 70-ounce trackless, textured Saxonies with a good twisted yarn will do the trick. Shop around and send us the names of the ones you like, and we'll advise you of the best bet. Berbers do well if you like the look.
Do berber carpets require a special pad?
We've had to restretch several installations of berber because of too soft a pad so the answer, we think, is Yes. We recommend a minimum 7-pound berber pad. Since using this type pad we've had no further problems with installation.
Our clothing store has commercial carpet glued to a concrete floor. The carpet is wrinkling and seems to be "growing." What causes this? I'm concerned a customer will trip over the loose areas.
There are several possible causes for this occurrence: (1) Loose jute, (2) repeated liquid spills (water, coffee, etc.), (3) heavy wheeled carts, etc., that can cause adhesive to breakdown, (4) poor adhesive rate applied at installation ...and many other causes. We suggest contacting a certified installer in your area. We will E-mail you a name, if you need one.
Every flooring store has a different story. Most contradict each other. Who do you believe?
Tough question! But try this test:
- Years in business under the same owner -- the longer, the better.
- If the store cannot install your carpet for three weeks, that's good. It may mean it uses only one installation crew that is slow and good.
- If the store has no problem furnishing quick installation, run for your life!
- If the store only guarantees the flooring when it's installed by the store's crews -- that's good. 99.9% of problems with flooring comes from improper installation.
- Last test -- Does the owner or salesperson listen very carefully to your comments? Only answer your questions precisely? Make no effort to sell you something? SHOP THERE!
(Provided 1, 2 and 4 above are true for this store).
We need 150 square yards of carpet. What will the shipping cost?
On average, allow $.50 a square yard. This is a good rule of thumb, but once you decide on a purchase we'll contact the freight carrier for an exact charge. Distance, weight, etc., all have a bearing on the cost.
My local store advises that the flooring warranty is not valid if shipped in from out of state.
That's not true. Local carpet-mill agents handle any warranty questions within one or two weeks of a registered complaint.
What happens if our purchase arrives damaged?
The carrier has insurance to cover in-transit damage. File a claim with the carrier through a simple phone call. (The truck lines have an excellent record for good delivery since we've been shipping with them since the early 70's.)
What if we for any reason, not a defect, want to return a product?
Carpet Corporation will make an accommodation return available but the customer must pay the freight charges [ both incoming & return] and the standard 25% restocking cost. When the return is inspected at our warehouse platform, an appropriate credit will promptly be issued.
We've just had a carpet installed in our home. Bands, or dark shadows, seem to run across the carpet every 3 or 4 feet. What's causing this? The installer says it's common and will go away.
Your installer is correct. This condition is caused by carpet being stored in one position, and a slight yarn flattening occurs across the roll. It's more pronounced in a plush construction, but occurs in other styles as well. After installation, the yarn will -- in time -- return to its normal, tufted position.
Biscuit, what can I do with carpet that was installed less than six months ago and the seams are parting? The store will do nothing but stall.
File a complaint with your local Magistrate Court. The cost will be around $25 to $35. Ask another dealer to inspect your carpet and estimate the cost of replacement. The court will advise a date to judge the complaint. The judge will settle the dispute and, 19 times out of 20, will decide in favor of the customer. If the store is smart they will satisfy you prior to the court date when they receive notice of the complaint from the judge.
How do you handle shipping?
When you call us we can give a freight quote based on the type of flooring, amount shipped, and destination. You pay less if you ship to a terminal and pick it up, so please check our list of distribution terminals to see if one is in your area.
